New Delhi, July 22: In overnight violence, mobs near Delhi's Jama Masjid on Saturday night set fire to police vehicles and stones DTC buses after which police resorted to lathicharge and teargas to disperse the protesters.
The violence took place at around 11:15 pm after several persons tried to forcibly enter a disputed mosque structure falling on the Delhi Metro route near Netaji Subhash Marg-Jama Masjid.
As police prevented people from entering the dispute structure, mobs gathered and set fire to a Delhi Police gypsy vehicle, a police van and some police motorbikes.
The mobs then went to stone 2 DTC buses and cars parked nearby, after which police used teargas and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob.
With tension running high, heavy police deployment was made. The Joint Commissioner of Police and Additional Commissioner of Police also visited the spot.
The situation presently is peaceful and under control, a police official said, but tension was still running, as devout Muslims began their Ramzan fasts from today.
