Tamil Nadu rains: Downpour likely to decrease from tomorrow; death toll mounts to 14 | Updates
The death toll due to heavy rainfall in the state of Tamil Nadu stands at 14 now.
Following incessant rains in parts of Tamil Nadu over the past few days, special teams from Pudukkottai, Salem, Ramanathapuram and Thanjavur to South Chennai have been rushed to upscale the relief and rescue operations. Heavy rains continue to lash Chennai and its nearby areas on Thursday morning, affecting vehicular movement and causing waterlogging in the city. Incessant rain caused water-logging in several parts of Chennai including the areas of Nungambakkam, Sterling road, KMC Hospital road due to heavy rainfall. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), depression would continue to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts around Chennai by Thursday evening. Meanwhile, schools in Coimbatore also remained closed on Wednesday in wake of the red alert issued by the weather department.

The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has converted into a depression causing heavy rainfall in a few parts of Tamil Nadu and is likely to cross the Chennai coast near Mahabalipuram by this evening. Due to the rainfall, the waterlogging situation has been created at some places in Chennai. To tackle the situation, 18 self-contained teams of NDRF have been deployed in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry in consultation with State authorities. Out of these, 11 teams are deployed in Tamil Nadu, two in Puducherry and five in Andhra Pradesh. Depression likely to cross b/w south Andhra, north Tamil Nadu coast around Chennai by evening. As far as rainfall for next 24 hrs is concerned, a few places in Chennai, Tirvallur, Kanjivaram, Ranipet dist expected to get heavy to very heavy rain. Moderate rainfall is expected to occur in rest of the places in northern Tamil Nadu & in south Tamil Nadu light to moderate rainfall is expected to occur. The office of Divisional Railway Manager of Southern Railway, Chennai on Thursday said that the majority of the services from MAS to Tiruvallur had been suspended due to waterlogging of tracks at Avadi and Ambattur.
