24-year-old Tabrez Ansari was lynched to death by an angry mob on bike theft suspicion in Jharkhand's Seraikela Kharsawan on June 17, 2019. He was tied to a tree, brutally beaten and allegedly forced to chant religious slogans. Anasari succumbed to injuries four days after being attacked. He was beaten up on allegations of theft and was later forced to chant "Jai Shri Ram" and "Jai Hanuman". A video of the incident had gone viral, leading to outrage across the country. Two police personnel were suspended in connection with the case.
PM Modi reacted to the incident
The lynching incident created a huge political outrage prompting a series of attacks by Opposition leaders on Modi government. Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 26, 2019 said in the Rajya Sabha that he was pained by the incident. The PM asserted the law would take its course in the case.
PM Modi also took on Opposition leaders saying some people in the Rajya Sabha were calling Jharkhand a hub of lynching, was this fair?
Why are they insulting a State? He asked. None of us have the right to insult the State of Jharkhand, the PM emphasised.
