Stubble burning: Punjab reports 1,251 fresh incidents on Monday amid alarming air pollution in Delhi

Punjab recorded the highest number of stubble-burning cases on Monday. This comes as Delhi has been witnessing alarming air pollution levels for the past two days. On Sunday, the AQI level breached 450 in the national capital.

As severe air pollution choked the national capital, Punjab on Monday reported 1,250 cases of stubble burning. This marks the season's highest stubble-burning count in a single day.  With this, the total count of stubble burning cases reached 9,655 in the state.

The stubble burning has been one of the most prominent causes of air pollution in the national capital. On November 6, the Central govt doubled the fine for farmers burning crop residue to deter them. The penalties increased to Rs 30,000 for those with more than five acres of land. Farmers with less than two acres of land will now have to pay environmental compensation of Rs 5,000, up from Rs 2,500.
