As devotees screamed on the bridge during the stampede, policemen swung into action and began throwing bodies, both alive and injured, into the river to make way, a survivor said.
A local police gram raksha samiti (village defence committee) member Rajushri Yadav said, he was eyewitness to what the policemen did.
Yadav said, he rescued six children from the scene of stampede including one from the river.
