New Delhi, Nov 23: The government on Friday said it has hiked charges for speed post services from Rs 12 to Rs 17 for local articles from October 1 following escalation in costs of operations.
“The Speed Post rates for local articles have been increased from Rs 12 to Rs 17 (including service tax) with effect from October 1, 2012,” minister for communications and IT Kapil Sibal said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
Sibal said the revision of rate became necessary following escalation in costs of operations since 2001, when the last major revision of speed post rate took place.
He added there is no proposal to roll back the hike. On a query if government is earning more profit through speed post services, Sibal said: “The Department of Posts is not earning more profit due to increase in tariff. The revision of rate will only partially cover the enhanced costs of operations.”
Asked if speed post services ensure timely delivery, Sibal said, there is time bound delivery as per the delivery norms given in the Citizen's Charter of the Department of Posts.
