Six villagers, including a sarpanch, were killed by Naxalites near Teregaon in Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh early on Sunday, police said.

Police officials told PTI that at Teregaon, Unchapur and Korcha, falling under Manapur police limits in the district, Naxalites killed six villagers including a sarpanch (village head) and threw their bodies outside the villages.

It could not be immediately ascertained why these villagers had been targeted by the Maoists. A police team has been sent to the spot, they said.

"We expect to get more information on the incident after recovering the bodies of the villagers," they said.

Rajnandgaon district has witnessed a series of Naxalite attacks in the past. In July last year, Maoists had attacked a police party killing 29 personnel, including Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar Choubey. PTI
