Six persons, including a woman and a child, were killed and four others injured when the New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi Express ran over them while they were crossing the track, triggering protests by locals who surrounded the train.

The mishap took place at 7:30 am on Tuesday when the train hit them as they failed to notice the approaching locomotive, an official said.

Incensed over the incident, hundreds of villagers surrounded the train and resorted to stone pelting. The train passengers cowered inside their compartments and waited helplessly for security enforcements to arrive.

People were demanding action against the driver of the train, but railway officials were adamant saying that the mishap was no fault of the driver.

The train was held up for nearly seven  hours, after which district administration officials came and persuaded the villagers to disperse.

District authorities have announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased and said they would bear the cost of treatment of the injured. The Railways refused to give any compensation on its part to the victims of the mishap.

The deceased have not been identified so far as the bodies are severely mutilated.

"Due to the impact, the engine of the train failed and the locomotive came to a halt," CPRO, Northern Railways, Anant Swaroop said.

However, normalcy between Delhi-Jaipur railway track has been restored. An engine has been sent from Delhi to facilitate the train's onward movement to Ajmer. PTI
