Ratlam (MP) : Situation in the curfew-bound areas of the city is under control with the police arresting nearly 125 persons for indulging in violence after a religious place was defiled, a senior officer said.
The curfew was clamped at 2 am in Station Road and Manak Chowk Police Station areas, where tension prevailed on Friday night when some unidentified persons threw cow-dung at a religious site.
"The situation in the curfew-bound police station areas is under control and so far we have arrested 125 persons for indulging in violence in the city," Ujjain Division Commissioner, T Dharma Rao told PTI over phone.
Five policemen and two journalists were injured in the violence on Friday night, he said adding that the injuries were not of serious nature.
A meeting of the District Peace Committee was also held in which representatives of both the groups were prevailed upon to ensure normalcy in their respective areas, he said.
Besides Commissioner, the meeting was also attended by the Inspector General (IG) Pavan Jain and Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Mayank Jain among others.
The Commissioner hoped that things would become normal by tomorrow in the curfew-bound areas.
After some unidentified persons defiled a religious place, groups of people set ablaze a number of vehicles, leading the police to fire several rounds in the air, fire teargas shells and cane-charge to control the situation, official sources said.
As the tension mounted, the local administration first imposed Section 144 (banning assembly of people) and later placed the affected areas under curfew.
Additional forces were called from neighbouring districts for deployment in the curfew-bound areas of the city. PTI
