Sindhurakshak tragedy: 18 families mourn missing Indian Navy mariners

Kanpur/Udhampur/Mumbai: The family of missing Naval Officer Lt. Commander Alok Kumar Sahu in Old Central Park, Kanpur is presently in mourning, with little chances of survival of all 18 Navy personnel in the sunk submarine INS Siindhurakshak i Mumbai. Lt Commander Alok Kumar Sahu's father Puttu Lal Sahu is a railway employee staying in Kanpur with his wife and two other sons. Daughter-in-law Dimple is in Mumbai awaiting the fate of her husband. In Udhampur near the India-Pak border, stays the family of missing sailor Kewal Singh (rank: LS UC I). His father Sagar Singh is inconsolable. Says Sagar Singh: "My son joined the Navy ten years back. From TV channels, we got to know that the submarine has met an accident. We called up his number, but the cellphone was switched off. I called his friend and he confirmed the news. The Navy should have informed us. It was their duty."Sagar Singh has sent his eldest son to Mumbai.Digvijay Singh, Kewal Singh's brother says: "He called us on Tuesday evening, hours before the disaster. We got to know from the media. No official information has been given to us yet."The family stays in Ramnagar tehsil of Udhampur district. Also missing, and presumed dead, are Lt. Commander R. Venkitaraj, anti-submarine warfare officer, hailing from Poozhapura in Thirubananthapuram, Sailor Liju Lawrence from Vazhichal, Krala (son of Lawrence and Vimala and married to Sowmya), Sailor V. Vishnu from Neendoor, Haippad, Alappuzha, and sailor Vikas from Kolassery near Thalassery, also from Kerala. Those also missing include Rajesh Tootika from Visakhapatnam, Narottam Deuri, from Lakhimpur Assam, and Timothy Sinha from Silchar, Assam.Hampered by poor visibility and water inside the INS Sindhurakshak submarine that exploded and sank, Navy divers on Thursday and early Friday morning struggled to locate the 18 trapped personnel on board who are feared killed. INS Sindhurakshak had 18 personnel on duty inside the submarine at the time of the accident.T. Rajesh, a 30-year-old sailor, from Pedagamtayada in Visakhapatnam district has been serving the Navy for the past ten years. He married two years back, and has a proud family of mother, father Appala Naidu, sister Roza and wife.INS Sindhurakshak had 18 personnel on duty inside the submarine at the time of the accident.
