New Delhi, Sep 18: Janata Dal-United president Sharad Yadav on Saturday obliquely lashed out at Narendra Modi's fast saying "nearly half the population in India do not get even one decent meal a day and yet it has become a fashion for people to sit on fast".

Yadav was responding to queries from newspersons about Modi's fast. His party Janata Dal-U , a major ally of BJP, has conspicuously stayed away from Modi's fast, which was attended by representatives from allies Akali Dal and Shiv Sena and prospective allies like AIADMK.

Yadav said, his party's stand on 2002 Gujarat riots has not changed. His party has severely criticised the role of Narendra Modi for the Gujarat riots.

"Half the population in India does not get a single decent meal a day, but it has now become a fashion for people to sit on fast", quipped Yadav on fasts by Swami Ramdev, Anna Hazare and Narendra Modi.

In Patna, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar smilingly folded his hands in 'namaskar' mode, the moment he was asked to react to Modi's fast. Nitish Kumar refused to comment.
