Amritsar, Apr 3 : SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar today claimed that he and his family were receiving threats through SMSes from a UK-based outfit for not taking timely steps in the case of Balwant Singh Rajoana, the death row convict in the assassination of former chief minister Beant Singh.
Makkar said an outfit claiming to be represented by Sikhs has been sending him messages that he and his family will be eliminated, blaming him for not taking adequate and timely steps in the Rajoana issue.
“The reality is that the stay on death sentence of Rajoana was granted by the Centre on the basis of clemency petition filed by us before the President. The matter was also pursued by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal,” he said.
Babbar Khalsa terrorist Rajoana's hanging, scheduled for March 31, was stayed by the Centre following a mercy petition by the SGPC to President Pratibha Patil.
Despite the threatening SMSes, Makkar said he had faith in superior being and would not lodge a police complaint. He also refused to name the Sikh outfit.
He said the SGPC would leave no stone unturned to commute the death sentence of Rajaona to life sentence.
