Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court today allowed the Durbar Mahila Samannoy Samiti, an organisation of sex workers, for Durga Puja in front of its office at Sonagachi in the metropolis.





A division bench comprising Justice Asim Kumar Banerjee and Justice M K Chaudhuri directed that the authorities may allow the Samiti to use space of 15 feet by eight feet besides it office on Nilmoni Mitra Street in north Kolkata.

The court requested three women lawyers to oversee whether the order was being complied by all parties in the matter.

The Samiti had stated that it had sought permission from the Kolkata Police to hold Durga Puja at the crossing of Abinash Kabiraj Lane and Masjid Bari Lane, but was refused.  

The state had told the court that permission could not be granted as erection of a pandal to hold the pujas there would create traffic congestion.
