Kolkata: The police have arrested another accused in West Bengal nun gang-rape case today.

Earlier, the Police made the first arrest in this case today morning in Mumbai.

Both men are reportedly illegal immigrants of Bangladeshi origin.

Gopal Sarkar, a resident of Habra in North 24 Parganas, a town close to West Bengal- Bengladesh border, allegedly gave shelter to the gang that was suspected to be involved in Ranaghat rape of a nun and robbery. He was arrested by the CID near his residence in Habra.

“Gopal is orginally a Bangladeshi who was staying in Habra town since 2002,” Dilip Adak, DIG, COD, West Bengal said.

Earlier in the day, the police arrested first suspect, identified as Sikandar Shaikh alias Salim, from his friend's residence in Nagpada, Mumbai.

CID claims that Salim was present during the brutal gang-rape of the nun in Ranaghat on March 14.

The nun was assaulted by the dacoits inside the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat, some 80 km from Kolkata. The gang also took Rs 12 lakh kept in the almirah locker before fleeing the place.

The CCTV footage at the convent had shown visuals of four persons involved in the crime. The incident sparked outrage in the country as well as abroad.

West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee had initially ordered a CID probe, but decided to hand over the case to CBI as the accused persons were suspected to have fled to Bangladesh.
