Kanpur: Ten people, including two women and six children, were dead and two injured when sand laden overturned in Kanpur's Rail Bazar area on Tuesday night.
All deceased were asleep when a truck stuck in a manhole and eventually overturned.
As soon as police was informed about the incident, they rushed to the site and started the rescue work with help of fire officials.
Both the injured were rushed to Sadar Hospital for emergency medical assistance, police said.
All deceased were members of a family, police.
Police said the truck driver managed to flee the spot after the incident.
The truck has been taken into police custody, an official said, adding that efforts are on to nab the driver.
Meanwhile, District Magistrate Kanpur Nagar Roshan Jacob announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh.
