New Delhi: The San Diego Museum is looking at future collaborations with National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) and the National Museum to bring collection of rare world art pieces to India.

“We do not only bring people to the museum, we take the art to the people. So, we do exhibitions outside our boundaries and create specific projects for communities,” Roxana Velasquez Director, San Diego Museum of Art told PTI.

One of the oldest museum in United States, San Diego Museum of Art has just completed 100 years of existence and boasts a collection of rare collection of Indian miniature paintings.

“So we are talking with the director of the national museum and director of the modern museum to exhibit this rare collection. There is nothing yet decided. But this is my first trip and I am eager to continue returning,” Velasquez said.

The San Diego Museum's Edwin Binney 3rd Collection comprises 1,453 works that survey every major school from the 12th to 19th century. The collection includes paintings made for the Mughal, Deccani, Rajasthani and Pahari courts. The collection was assembled by Edwin Binney 3rd, an heir to the Crayola fortune.

“The collection has traveled the world with the most recent being ‘Into India' exhibition at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Museo Nacional de Antropología, Mexico City, and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid,” Velasquez said.

In the past the NGMA and San Diego Museum of Art have jointly done a major Indian exhibition of the great Indian master Nandalal Bose. This exhibition was curated by Sonia from San Diego Museum of Art and the exhibit traveled to Philadelphia.

“I just wanted to set the tone of the kind of possibilities we have in terms of collaboration and also share the delightful things which this lady has done at the museum,” Rajeev Lochan Director National Gallery of Modern Art said.

Velasquez has helped organize many high profile exhibitions, such as: From El Greco to Dali: Great Spanish Masters from the Perez Simon Collection; the traveling exhibition Into India: South Asian Paintings from The San Diego Museum of Art; and The Human Beast: German Expressionism at The San Diego Museum of Art.

“I think in the near future probably collaboration will appear. The idea is of course to enhance the collaborations between the museum and Indian cultural institutions. We will do it through knowledge, symposiums or even in exchange in works of art,” Velasquez said.
