New Delhi: Nearly 1200 resident doctors of Safdarjung Hospital in the city, on an indefinite strike for two days demanding adequate security, Wednesday called off their agitation following assurances from authorities that their demand will be met.

"The issue has been resolved amicably and the strike has been called off," N K Mohanty, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said after a meeting with the agitating doctors. He said that the medics have been given assurances that adequate security arrangements will be made for them.

The doctors had called for a strike at the hospital yesterday after one of their colleagues was allegedly beaten up by relatives of a patient.

Though the striking doctors have opened a parallel Out Patient Department (OPD) near the emergency wing of the hospital to cater to patients, many people from several states like Bihar, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring areas, who required emergency services, were left to fend for themselves for the last two days.
