Srinagar, Mar 28: Restrictions on the movement of Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq have been lifted after he filed a writ petition in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court here against his house arrest.
“The restrictions on Mirwiaz were lifted late last night after he (Mirwaiz) filed a writ petition in the High Court through his counsels against his continued house arrest since he came from Delhi,” a spokesman of Hurriyat Conference said.
The spokesman said Mirwaiz has been under house arrest since February 9, the day Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru was executed inside Tihar jail in Delhi.
Mirwaiz was first placed under house arrest in New Delhi till February 21 and then in his Nigeen residence here immediately after his return, he said.
“The motive behind putting Mirwaiz under house arrest was to keep him away from the people, besides not allowing him to fulfil his religious and political responsibilities in the wake of Guru's hanging,” the spokesman said.
Mirwaiz filed the petition on March 26, challenging his house arrest on the plea that there is no written order to keep him under “illegal house-confinement”.
