New Delhi: India will be celebrating its 67th Independence day on 15th August 2013, but how many of us today know about the struggle and sacrifices of heroes to free India from the clutches of



On 29 March 1857 at the Barrackpore parade ground, near Kolkata, 29-year-old Mangal Pandey of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry declared that he would rebel against his commanders. He fired against his sergeant-major and the adjutant. One of the soldiers Shaikh Paltu restrained Pandey from firing. After failing to incite his comrades, Mangal Pandey shot and injured himself. He was court-martialled on April 6 and hanged on April 8.
