Rain mayhem: PM Modi assures 'unwavering support' to Himachal, Uttarakhand as downpours continue to batter

Rain mayhem: Incessant rains unleashed more death and destruction on Monday in parts of north India with 37 people killed in landslides and other rain-related incidents in the last two days even as the Army and NDRF teams stepped in to intensify the relief and rescue operations.

Rain mayhem: Torrential rains in several parts of India have caused destruction leading to disruption in normal life. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are one of the adversely affected states by the incessant rain leading to landslides, shooting stones, and floods. Taking cognisance of the tense situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called CMs of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and assured "unwavering support" to them as heavy rainfall caused widespread damage across the states.

PM Modi inquired about the extent of the damage caused to life and property

While speaking to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, PM Modi inquired about the extent of the damage caused to life and property due to heavy rains and floods. According to an official statement, CM Sukhu informed Modi that the state has been severely affected by floods and landslides. 

CM Sukhu asked pm to declare the situation a national calamity

According to the statement, he also said that roads have been damaged while water and electric supply has been disrupted. Moreover, he asked the prime minister to declare the situation a national calamity. 

PM assured substantial assistance

PM Modi has assured substantial assistance from the central government to the states to recover from the extensive losses caused by the calamity. 

In the wake of excessive rainfall, Prime Minister also spoke with senior ministers and officials.  In a tweet in Hindi, Dhami said Prime Minister Modi spoke with him over the phone in the wake of heavy rains in Uttarakhand and enquired about the situation in the state. "Gave detailed information to the prime minister about the loss of life, property and crops, condition of roads, operation of Char Dham Yatra and Kanwar Yatra in the state," Dhami said.

CM Dhami on PM Modi's assurance

Dhami apprised PM Modi about the rescue operations being carried out by the SDRF, police and administration on full alert mode. "Heartfelt gratitude on behalf of all people of the state for the prime minister's assurance of all possible assistance from the central government," the Uttarakhand chief minister said.
