New Delhi: Indian Railways is planning for gradual elimination of level crossings in 2014-15 to ensure safety of the commuters.

Around 890 railway crossings, out of which 730 are unmanned & 160 are manned, will be eliminated in the current financial year, the Ministry of Railways said in a twitter post today.

This elimination process of level crossings will involve construction of over bridges, under bridges, subways and diversion roads.

The rising numbers of accidents at level crossing gates have been a cause of concern for the Indians Railways.

According to the records of the Indian Railways provided last year, there are 31,846 railway level crossings across the country, of which 13,530 are either unmanned or without barriers.

Last year, a RTI reply revealed that the Indian Railways, in past 12 years, spent around Rs 2,611 crore on measures to eliminate level crossings across the nation.

Accidents at unmanned crossings take place only due to negligence on the part of both - the Railways and the common people.
