Maharajganj (UP), Feb 8: Seeking to woo Muslim voters in Uttar Pradesh, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi today said the UPA government has initiated several welfare schemes for the community but they have not been properly implemented in the state.
“The UPA government has initiated scholarships for Muslim students but they have not been made available to them in UP,” he said while addressing an election rally at Nautanwa near the Indo-Nepal border here.
Rahul said he was shocked to know that there was only one ‘Muslim district magistrate' in the state.
Continuing his tirade against BSP supremo Mayawati and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, he said these leaders had “lost touch” with the people.
“Have these leaders visited any village during the past five years?...they will never understand the problems of the common people,” he said.
The Congress leader alleged that during the past 22 years, successive non-Congress regimes had done nothing for the state, as a result of which it has lagged behind.
He also listed the flagship schemes of the UPA government such as MNREGS and RTI, but lamented that the UP government has not implemented these schemes properly.
Rahul also ridiculed the India Shining slogan of the BJP and said he failed to understand why this slogan was given as there was no power or road and many people were still hungry.
He said, “We never make false promises and we do whatever we promise.”
