Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday backed the Women's Reservation Bill in Lok Sabha that was introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. The bill seeks to reserve 33 per cent of seats in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. During the debate on the bill, the Wayanad MP said that he is in support of it but lamented that the measure was "incomplete" as it lacks quota for other backward classes.
The 53-year-old leader during the debate in Lok Sabha on the women's reservation bill said that the President should have been invited when the transfer of proceedings took place from the old to the new Parliament building. Further, he also pushed for a caste census.
The MP from Wayanad said a huge step in the transfer of power to women was Panchayati Raj and the present bill was another big step.

Meeting a long-pending demand, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government on Tuesday introduced a bill to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The implementation of the bill may take some time. With this, it is unlikely to be in force for the next Lok Sabha elections in 2024 as the reservation will come into effect only after a delimitation exercise is completed.
