Rahul Gandhi leaves ED office after 11-hr grilling, to appear again on Wednesday

The ED is recording the statement of Rahul Gandhi under criminal sections of the PMLA. The probe is related to alleged financial irregularities in the party-promoted Young Indian that owns the National Herald newspaper, published by the Associated Journals Limited (AJL).

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was questioned by the ED for over 11 hours on Tuesday, the second day of his appearance in the National Herald money-laundering case. Gandhi (51) left the Enforcement Directorate (ED) headquarters on APJ Abdul Kalam Road in central Delhi around 11.30 pm. He has been called for questioning again on Wednesday. He arrived at the agency's office at 11:05 am on Tuesday, accompanied by his sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.  His questioning began at 11:30 am after the completion of some legal formalities. He left the ED office for lunch and rejoined the probe after a break of one hour.

His statement was recorded in multiple sessions under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and after Tuesday's exercise, he has clocked close to 21 hours of questioning by the ED investigators. Gandhi, an MP from Wayanad in Kerala, spent over 10 hours at the federal agency's office on Monday, where he was similarly questioned and his statement was recorded.

    'Political vendetta': Stalin slams ED action against Gandhis

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin on Tuesday lashed out at the Enforcement Directorate action against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and dubbed it as an "outrageous act of political vendetta" against the national party by the ruling BJP at the Centre "using" the probe agency.

    In a tweet, Stalin said the political opponents should be fought politically. "I condemn the outrageous act of political vendetta against Congress party and its leaders Tmt Sonia Gandhi and Thiru @RahulGandhi by the ruling BJP govt using the Enforcement Directorate," he said in a tweet.

    Delhi Police again detained senior Congress leaders, claims MP Manickam Tagore

    Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Tuesday claimed that Delhi Police has again detained senior Congress leaders ahead of Rahul Gandhi's second appearance before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald case. Tagore along with PL Punia, Qazi Muhammad Nizamuddin and other Congress leaders was seen in the video posted by Congress MP.

    In a video taken by Tagore in a moving bus with other leaders, he said, "Today we came to the AICC, myself, Punia ji, Qazi Nizamuddin and we are all there. We were not allowed inside the AICC office. The police misbehaved with us and we are being taken to an unknown destination. We feel that the force of Amit Shah cannot stop us."

    Rahul Gandhi ED case: What happened on Day 1

    Rahul Gandhi went from the party headquarters on Akbar Road to the ED office in central Delhi, a few kilometres away, in a convoy of seven cars after walking for some distance with his supporters. Accompanied by top Congress leaders, including sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Gandhi arrived at the ED office at around 11 am on Monday. 

    After about two-and-a-half hours, he left the ED office for a lunch break during which he met his mother Sonia Gandhi at the Ganga Ram Hospital, where she has been admitted, and returned at 3.30 pm.

    The questioning was over by nearly 11 pm after which Gandhi had left the ED office.
