The Centre on Wednesday appointed senior advocate R Venkataramani as the new Attorney General of India for a period of three years.
The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification that said, "The President is pleased to appoint R Venkataramani, Senior Advocate as Attorney General for India for a period of three years from the date he enters upon his office."
Born on April 13 1950 in Puducherry, Venkataramani enrolled in July, 1977 in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and moved to the Supreme Court in 1979. He was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in 1997. He had also been a member of the Law Commission in 2010.
Venkataramani is an eminent advocate of the Supreme Court and has appeared in various matters as varied as constitutional law, environmental law, taxation, tribal rights, and child and women's rights.
Other than this, he has also represented several state governments, the Union government, universities and public sector undertakings in major litigation in the Supreme Court as well as High Courts. This comes days after another senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi declined the offer of the post.
He will succeed K K Venugopal, whose term will end on September 30. At the request of the Central Government, he agreed to continue for three more months as Attorney General of India.
Venugopal, 91, was appointed to the post in July 2017. He was reappointed as the top law officer of the country for three months on June 29.
The Attorney General for India is the Indian government's chief legal advisor and is its principal Advocate before the Supreme Court of India.AGs are appointed by the President of India on the advice of the Union Cabinet under Article 76(1) of the Constitution.
