NCP Maharashtra unit president R R Patil, who resigned as Deputy Chief Minister in the wake of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, may stage a comeback in the new Congress-NCP government, party sources said in Mumbai on Saturday.

Patil resigned on December 1, taking moral responsibility for the Mumbai attacks, after facing flak for his 'bade shahron mein aise ek adh hadse hote rahte hain (in big cities one-two such incidences can occur)'. He was later appointed state NCP president.

"Patil has done good work for the party, helping it win 62 of the 114 seats it contested," party sources told PTI.

Fifty-one-year-old Patil is one of the most popular leaders in the 10-year-old party founded by Sharad Pawar.

MPCC chief Manikrao Thakre is also eyeing a cabinet berth after the sterling performance of Congress, which won 82 of the 174 seats it contested. "Thakre wants to join the ministry," Congress sources said. PTI
