The Punjab government has issued a notification giving pension to former MLAs only for one term following an assent by the Punjab governor to a Bill in this regard. The Punjab Assembly had passed the Punjab State Legislature Members (Pension and Medical Facilities Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2022 on June 30.
CM Mann tweeted, "I am very happy to inform Punjabis that Hon'ble Governor has approved the "One MLA - One Pension" bill...Govt has issued notification. This will save a lot of tax for the public."
The state government is expected to save around Rs 19.53crore annually through the move.
What is one MLA, one pension
According to this law, an MLA will be given pension only according to his one term. Now it will not matter how many times the leader has contested the election of MLA. This will also save expenses on the pension of MLAs.
What was the law earlier?
Earlier, the rule was that if an MLA has won the election five times, then he will get pension according as per his five terms. For example, if a leader gets a pension of Rs 50,000 after becoming an MLA, then he wins 5 times more, then he will be given a pension of about Rs 2.5 lakh.
