Mumbai: The much-delayed project to install CCTV camera network in Pune is about to take off as the Maharashtra government has signed an agreement with a private company to install 1,285 cameras in the city.

A senior official from the state Home Department said private firm Allied Digital Services would install the CCTV cameras in the city, which would cost more than Rs 224 crore.

“We have identified 440 spots where the cameras will be installed. The entire process will be completed within 42 weeks,” Home Secretary Vineet Agrawal told reporters here.

1,068 static cameras will monitor the activities in the city, he said adding that 217 cameras will have facility of zooming, panning and tilting.

“All these cameras are high-resolution. 78 CCTVs can even capture the numberplate of vehicles,” Agrawal said.

The need for CCTV cameras in Pune city was realised after the murder of rationalist and anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar in August this year.
