New Delhi, Feb 8: The decades-old pontoon bridge built over river Yamuna linking Wazirabad with Majnu Ka Tila  in north Delhi was washed away Thursday evening due to sudden discharge of water by Haryana government from the Hathni Kund barrage.

Nearly 27 lakh cusecs water was released by Haryana, bringing a sudden spike in the water level of Yamuna flowing in Delhi.

35 out of the 62 pontoons were washed away in the sudden discharge of water breaking it into three parts.

Nobody was injured but officials are now busy trying to locate the iron pontoons. Five pontoons were found later.

The old pontoon bridge was meant for light vehicles to avoid traffic jams on the Wazirabad bridge.

Swirling river water entered hundreds of slum huts set up on the river bank.

The local administration has begun evacuating people from the river bank.
