Guwahati: Poachers on Sunday night shot dead a male rhinoceros and fled with its horn, police said.
The carcass of the male rhino was found at Burapahar Range by forest guards on Monday morning.
Kaziranga National Park and police officials said, the guards first heard sound of gunshots at around 12:30 am. When a team of guards and Assam Police rushed to the spot, the poachers had fled towards the hillside of Karbi Anglong district.
The horn of the male Rhino was found missing. Two live and four empty cartrdiges of an Ak 47 assault rifle, a machete and a woollen shawl were found at the scene of crime.
The incident took place 500 metres away from the Borhola forest guard camp.
So far, 27 rhinos have been killed in Assam this year so far.
