New Delhi: Viber, a global mobile messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) company, said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Public Chat on the app has become the biggest till date in India.
Modi joined Viber public chat on January 26, 2015, on the occasion of Republic Day.
Within weeks, the prime minister got more than 8.5 lakh followers on Viber, the company said in a press release.
This is the first ever presence of the prime minister - who is tech savvy and remains connected with fans and people through social media - on an instant messaging app.
Viber, which has 37 million Indian users, offers free messaging and HD-quality calls and more than 50 public chats.
Launched last year, public chats allow users to discover, share and follow live discussions from a wide variety of known personalities, celebrities and brands across genres like music, sports, politics, fashion, entertainment and more, using the familiar interface of the instant messaging platform.
Anyone on Viber can follow these chats on their mobile device. Conversations are multimedia and include text, photos, audio, video, stickers, web links and more.

Modi launched his public chat on January 26 by saying: "Hello World! Great being on Viber."
Viber has launched its public chats with famous personalities like Sachin Tendulkar, Bollywood superstars Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and many more.
