The Modi government will recruit 10 lakh people in different departments and ministries in the next 1.5 years, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said on Tuesday morning.

According to a tweet shared by the PMO India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed all the departments and ministries to begin recruitment in mission mode.

The government's decision comes amid the opposition's frequent criticism of it on the issue of unemployment. A large number of vacant posts in different government sectors has often been flagged.

"PM Narendra Modi reviewed the status of Human Resources in all departments and ministries and instructed that recruitment of 10 lakh people be done by the Government in mission mode in next 1.5 years," PMO India's tweet reads.

Earlier in April, PM Modi had met top government officials and asked them to prioritise the process of filling vacancies in various government departments so that opportunities are created.

According to the government data tabled in the Rajya Sabha in February, there was more than 8.2 lakh vacant posts in the Central government departments as on March 1, 2020.
