Parliament Winter Session 2024: Both Houses adjourned for the day amid uproar by Opposition

Proceedings of both Houses have been adjourned for the day amid a ruckus by the Opposition. The Parliament will reconvene on Wednesday at 11 am. There will be no sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on November 26, to commemorate "Constitution Day"

Proceedings of Lok Sabha have been adjourned till  12 pm amid uproar by the Opposition. 

Proceedings of both Houses have begun. As many as 16 bills are slated to be tabled in the Winter Session which is scheduled to continue till December 20. 

The Opposition parties have requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to extend the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). It has been done in order to allow the committee more time to thoroughly investigate and deliberate on crucial matters under its purview.

The Opposition has written to Lok Sabha Speaker in this regard.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed the Opposition, stating that some who have been rejected by the people are attempting to control Parliament through disruptive tactics. He noted that such behaviour is being closely observed by the public, who hold them accountable and deliver punishment when the time comes. "Some people usurp their rights and they do not even get the opportunity to speak in the House...But those who have been continuously rejected by the people 80-90 times do not allow discussions to take place in the Parliament. They neither respect the spirit of democracy nor do they understand the importance of people's aspirations. They have no responsibility towards them, they are unable to understand them and the result is that they never live up to the expectations of the people." he added. 

Speaking ahead of the Winter Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked that the country is entering the final phase of 2024 and gearing up for 2025. He highlighted the unique importance of this Winter Session of Parliament, emphasising its alignment with the beginning of the 75th year of the Indian Constitution. PM Modi announced that a special celebration would be held tomorrow in the Samvidhan Sadan to mark this historic milestone, reflecting on the Constitution's enduring legacy and its role in shaping India's democratic journey.

Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the Parliament, ahead of the commencement of the Winter Session of Parliament today. The Winter Session of Parliament begins today and will continue till December 20, 2024. 

Ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, Congress MP Manickam Tagore stated that leaders of the I.N.D.I.A  bloc leaders are meeting at the residence of Leader of Opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge to strategise. Tagore emphasised that during yesterday's all-party meeting, the INDIA alliance raised concerns over the Adani scandal, which is reportedly worth over Rs 25,000 crore.

Congress MP Manish Tewari has given an Adjournment Motion notice in the Lok Sabha, demanding a discussion on the impact of recent legal developments involving the Adani Group. Tewari called for a debate on how the indictments against the conglomerate in the United States could affect India's standing as a business destination and the strength of its regulatory and oversight mechanisms.

Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan has urged the Rajya Sabha to hold a short-duration discussion on the pressing issue of air pollution in Delhi. In a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, Ranjan invoked Rule 176 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, emphasising the need to deliberate on the alarming pollution levels affecting the national capital.

During the Winter Session of Parliament, Congress is expected to prioritise discussions on the Manipur crisis and alleged bribery charges against the Adani Group. These issues are likely to feature prominently in the opposition's strategy as they aim to hold the government accountable on key matters of public and political interest.

Ahead of the commencement of the Winter Session of Parliament on Monday, floor leaders of I.N.D.I.A bloc parties will hold a meeting in Parliament House to decide the strategy of the opposition. The meeting will be held at 10 am on November 25. Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to decide the strategy of the Opposition for the Parliamentary Session.

As many as 16 bills, including the Waqf Act (Amendment) Bill, are listed to be presented during the current winter session of parliament. Other bills that are listed for introduction, consideration and passing include the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, the Bills of Lading Bill, the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, the Railways (Amendment) Bill, the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, and the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Bill. The Boilers Bill, the Rashtriya Sahkari Vishwavidyalaya Bill, the Punjab Courts (Amendment) Bill, the Merchant Shipping Bill, the Coastal Shipping Bill, and the Indian Ports Bill, are also included in the list.
