Parliament passes 3 new criminal law bills, both Houses adjourned sine die bringing end to Winter Session
Parliament's Winter Session was adjourned sine die, a day ahead of schedule ending three frenetic weeks that saw a security breach in Lok Sabha, suspension of 146 MPs, the expulsion of Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra in the "bribe-for-query" case and passage of three criminal bills.
Parliament Winter Session: A new record was set up in the new Parliament building in this winter session as three key Bills - Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023; the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023; and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023 - were passed which will completely overhaul the country's criminal laws. While 146 MPs were suspended over the ruckus created for demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the Parliament security breach. The session, which began on December 4, saw both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha running largely peacefully for the first week but the scenario changed after December 13 when TMC MP Mahua Moitra who was facing cash for query allegations, was expelled from the Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, two people jumped into the chamber of the Lower House of Parliament from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow gas from canisters and shouted slogans before being overpowered by MPs.The Winter session began on December 4 and was scheduled to conclude on December 22.

Mimicry was unfortunate: JMM MP Mahua Maji
"First of all, I think the mimicry was unfortunate. It should not have happened because this sets a wrong precedent. But this precedent was started by the BJP. Several of its senior leaders had mimicked senior leaders of Congress and other parties. Perhaps this happened under that precedent, but this is unfortunate. I condemn this. There should be a healthy environment in the Parliament...They (Opposition) had just demanded that the Home Minister should come and speak for 10 minutes on the security breach. Had he done that, this chaos would not have occurred and proceedings would have taken place smoothly...It seems that this might be a strategy by the ruling side, to not speak initially on any issue that is demanded and then speak after all the Bills are passed," said JMM MP Mahua Maji.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Mimicry row
"It is an individual act. Therefore we know that BJP and spin masters would like to divert from the real issues. We are raising the issue of Parliamentary security breach and we want an answer from Amit Shah. BJP MP Pratap Simha has given a pass to those intruders, we are asking for action on him but that is not discussed. Vice President is not getting pained over this, he is speaking about the mimicry by a member. PM Modi has done more remarkable mimicry in Lok Sabha, who will ask about that?...Ministers like Giriraj Singh always attack Rahul Gandhi. Their livelihood is through Rahul Gandhi...Let it go on," said Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Mimicry row.
