Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha adjourned till Wednesday amid opposition ruckus

Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Tuesday without transacting substantial business as Congress and other opposition members created an uproar demanding discussion on the issue of farmers' protest over the three new farm bills.

Lok Sabha witnessed repeated adjournment on Tuesday as the Opposition insisted on discussion over farm protests. As soon as the proceedings in the Lower House started, there was sloganeering from the Opposition benches. Speaker Om Birla appealed MPs to maintain decorum of the House and let it function, but in vain.

Earlier, Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Tuesday without transacting substantial business as Congress and other opposition members created an uproar demanding discussion on the issue of farmers' protest over the three new farm bills. The House was first adjourned for about 40 minutes till 10:30 am, then till 11:30 am and then to 12:30 pm. When the House re-assembled at 12:30 pm, protesting members again trooped in the Well raising slogans, forcing Deputy Chairman Harivansh to adjourn proceedings for the day. Before adjourning the House, the Deputy Chairman appealed to members to return to their seats and follow COVID-19 protocols. However, they did not heed to his requests.

Four bills were listed for consideration and passing in the legislative business for the day. They were: The Major Port Authorities Bill, 2020; The National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management Bill, 2019; The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020; and The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Bill, 2020.

The tourism ministry has no plans to approach the GST Council for reducing the goods and services tax on all hotel rooms to 12 per cent, Union Tourism Minister Prahlad Patel said on Tuesday. The ministry is aware of the tax levied on various tourism products and services, including hotels, as the same directly impacts the country's tourism competitiveness vis-a-vis other countries, he said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. "At present, the Ministry of Tourism has no plan to approach the GST Council for reducing GST (goods and services tax) on all hotel rooms to 12 per cent, since the GST Council decides the rate of taxation after taking into consideration the factors affecting various segments of business as well as to ensure optimum revenue generation required for overall development of the economy," Patel said.

Supply order for Covishield vaccine was placed after drug regulator approved it: Govt

For the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines, a supply order dated January 11 was placed with the Serum Institute of India after Covishield was approved for restricted use in emergency situation by India's drug regulator, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday. Union Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey was responding to a question on whether the government has finalised a pricing and supply agreement with the Serum Institute of India Limited for COVID-19 vaccines. Covishield is being manufactured by the Pune-based firm with technology transfer from AstraZeneca/Oxford University.
