New Delhi, Nov 9: Over 4,300 new auto-rickshaws fitted with global positioning systems (GPS) have hit the city roads in the last one month, Delhi Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami said today.

He said another 7,700 auto-rickshaws will soon be made available.

Delhi government had started the process for issuance of 12,000 new permits for auto-rickshaws in September, almost a year after the Supreme Court allowed plying of more such vehicles in the city.

People having license for driving auto-rickshaw are eligible for getting the permits. Currently, the city has a fleet of around 60,000 auto-rickshaws.

Meanwhile Goswami today held a meeting with vice-president of Bajaj Auto C K Rao and requested him to make available more auto-rickshaws in Delhi considering the demand.

Rao told Goswami that the company would double its quota of auto-rickshaws for Delhi with immediate effect.

Goswami also asked Rao to submit a daily report in respect of delivery of auto-rickshaws to dealers.

In the wake of reports of irregularities in the sale of auto-rickshaws, Goswami had last month threatened punitive action against authorised dealers of the vehicles if they do not comply with the laid down norms while selling the three-wheelers.
