Shirdi (Maha), Aug 10: A 35-year-old man was today arrested in connection with the alleged murder of five beggars in the town, police said yesterday.
Following his arrest, the accused, identified as Satish Ramdas Alkol, a resident of Nagarsool in Yeola taluka of Nashik district, was produced in Rahata court and remanded to police custody till August 13, Deputy Superintendent of Police Vivek Patil told reporters.
Two beggars, one of whom was a woman, were murdered at Sai Nagar Railway Station on July 8. Three weeks later, three more beggars were found murdered in different localities of the town. They had been killed using stones, police said.
Based on the CCTV footages, a sketch of the suspect was prepared, Patil said. Following the spate of alleged murders, police had collected information from 85 beggars to get some leads into the case, Patil added.
