Srinagar, Aug 9: At least nine persons died and four others were injured when a taxi rolled down a gorge in north Kashmir Baramulla district today.
A Tata Sumo taxi rolled down a 150-feet gorge between Barnate and Boniyar villages in Uri Tehsil close to Line of Control in Baramulla district, a spokesman of the traffic department said.
Six persons were killed on the spot while three others succumbed to injuries while being shifted to a hospital, he said.
Four other passengers were injured in the accident and have been referred to a hospital here, the spokesman said, adding further details of the incident are awaited.
Tata Sumo taxis are allowed to carry only nine passengers.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed shock over the loss of precious human lives in the road accident.
In the condolence message to the bereaved families, the Chief Minister conveyed his grief and sympathy to them.
He has sanctioned ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh for the deceased and Rs 10,000 for the injured.
The Chief Minister directed the District Administration and Health Department for providing all possible medicare to the injured.
He has prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and early recovery of the injured.
Union Minister Farooq Abdullah, state ministers Taj Mohiuddin and Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan also expressed sorrow over the loss of life in the mishap.
