Pune: NCP leader Chanchala Kodre was today elected the new mayor of Pune.
She secured 83 votes defeating her Shiv Sena opponent Sonam Zende by 41 votes in the mayoral elections held in Pune Municipal Corporation today.
This seat was prestigious for NCP leaders Sharad Pawar's nephew Ajit Pawar.
NCP already commands majority in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Baramati and several other municipal corporations and nagar panchayats.
Chanchala has been elected from Panel No 20, which covers the areas of Mundhwa and Magarpatta City.
She is an MA in English, and is outspoken. She is also the daughter-in-law of Kailash Kodre, who is said to be close to Sharad Pawar.
Securing the Pune mayor seat is considered a big win for NCP as Pune is considered a stronghold both by the Shiv Sena and the Congress led by Suresh Kalmadi.
