Naval pilot Abhilash Tomy becomes first Indian to sail round the world solo, welcomed by President

Mumbai, Apr 7 : Naval pilot Lt Cdr Abhilash Tomy was welcomed on Saturday at the Gateway of India by President Pranab Mukherjee, after he set the record of being the first Indian to sail

Somy used  INSV Mhadei, which was custom-built for the Indian Navy on the banks of river Mandovi in Goa in 2009. This was the boat's second solo circumnavigation trip within a span of four years.

Somy sailed off on his trip from Gateway of India on November 1, 2012 and returned on April 6, 2013. He crossed the Equator twice. The five-month-long voyage was named Sagar Parikrama 2.

Abhilash Tomy  became the  first Indian and probably the first professional aviator to cover three oceans—Indian Ocean, South Atlantic and South Pacific—unassisted and non-stop.
