Mumbai: A day after being administered with wrong antibiotic at Bhabha Hospital in Kurla, a middle-aged woman succumbed to the serious drug reaction on Tuesday night.
The deceased, identified as Sayra, 47, was admitted to the female ward of the hospital on Monday following seasonal ailment.
On Monday, 33 patients, all female, were admitted to the fourth floor of the civic-run hospital. They were undergoing treatment for seasonal illness like fever, cold and typhoid. All the patients were given sefxim and sanacef injections following which their health further deteriorated. Later, as a precautionary measure, the hospital management decided to shift 27 patients including Sayra to nearby KEM Hospital for emergency medical assistance.
Sayra's relatives are now demanding a thorough probe into the incident to fix the accountability.
“She was suffering from typhoid. The reports were positive and thus she was admitted here for better treatment. Doctors had said that they will discharge my wife on Wednesday. How this happened? Why wrong medicines were given? We demand an investigation into the incident,” Sayra's husband Nur Mohammad Sheikha said.
Meanwhile, Dr Pradeep Angre, Medical Superintendent of the Bhabha Hospital said that a high-level inquiry will be ordered to look into the matter. He also said that these injections are commonly used in seasonal ailments.
So far, the city police has not registered any case so far.
The incident has also raised questions on authenticity of medicines being supplied by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to such hospitals in the city.
