A power outage was reported from some pockets in central and south Mumbai on Sunday morning, resulting in the halting of the local train services on one rail line, officials said. However, the power supply was restored completely within an hour.
Speaking on the matter, President T&D Tata Power, Sanjay Banga said, "At 9:50 am, in South Mumbai, Chembur, Bandra & Santacruz suburbs areas, along with Central and part Western Railway, power supply got affected due to tripping of MSETCL line at MSETCL Trombay receiving station that connects to Tata Power transmission system. This resulted in the tripping of Trombay Generation and cascade tripping of some internal lines affecting 850 MW load of all Discoms in Mumbai. The total demand of Mumabi came down from 2000 MW to 1200 MW. Tata Power immediately stepped up the hydro generation to full capacity for faster restoration and avoidance of larger outage. The Power supply was restored completely in around an hour."
During the hour-long power outage in the city, train movement halted between Andheri and Churchgate railway stations, Western Railway's chief public relations officer Sumit Thakur said.
The local trains, considered as the lifeline of the country's financial capital, were moving on the Central Railway route after a brief disruption, but the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus faced a blackout, officials said.
Prior to this, residents of Sion, Dadar and Matunga areas in central Mumbai reported a power outage. There were also similar reports from parts of south Mumbai, said Nehal Shah, a municipal corporator.
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport, a state undertaking, distributes power in the island city and depends on producers like Tata Power.
Earlier, Mumbai had faced a massive power outage on October 12, 2020, which lasted up to 18 hours in certain pockets.
