MUMBAI-The 27-year-old son of an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) shot dead his wife before killing himself with his father's service revolver, early on Friday. The incident took place at the Malad (west) residence of ACP Madhukar Kurne, reports DNA.
The deceased, Abhijeet and wife Ashwini, 21, got married in February and there was no apparent reason for his act. He was in the tours and travels business and had rented out three cars to call centres.
"According to preliminary investigations, Abhijeet took his father's service revolver to his room before the family retired for the day. He shot his wife in the temple from point blank range. The bullet exited from the other side and was stuck in the pillow. After that he pointed the revolver at his head and pulled the trigger. The bullet pierced his head and hit a cupboard," said a police officer from the Malad police station.
The murder and suicide cases came to the notice of the family when the two did not come out of their room till 8am.
The family members peeped through the key-hole of the door and found the couple lying dead on the bed in a pool of blood. The Malad police was informed around 9am.
"A murder and suicide case has been registered against Abhijeet. The family members did not hear any gunshot and they also said there were no quarrels between the two," said a police officer.
ACP Kurne was on leave for a few days and had an eye operation recently. Besides Kurne and his wife, Abhijeet and Aswini and his younger brother Amar used to stay in the third floor flat near Mittal college. The family members were in a state of shock and did not wish to discuss the incident.
