New Delhi: The Central government has issued a directive seeking ‘active participation' of millions of MNREGA workers for the ambitious ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' (Clean India Mission), slated to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2.
The Centre has asked state governments to ensure participation of people who worked in the rural job scheme in the cleanliness drive.
"It is crucial that all ranks and file working in MNREGA participate actively in this campaign," the Centre said in a letter sent to state governments.
MNREGA workers should be administered pledge for cleanliness and officials should take up joint action for collective cleaning of the village through ‘shrama daan', it added.
The Prime Minister had appealed in his Independence Day speech to every citizen to strive to make India clean. Modi had also said that he will himself go out using the broom to make the drive a success.
The mission will be launched by Modi on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. It aims at making India an open defecation free country by 2019, coinciding with the celebration of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
