Srinagar: An earthquake shook Kashmir valley tonight, sparking panic among the residents who rushed out of their homes.
The 3.1 magnitude tremor, which occured at 8.02 pm, was felt across Kashmir, officials said.
They said there were not reports of any casualties or damage to property due to the tremor so far.
Kashmir is located in seismic zone V and witnessed one of the worst earthquakes in its history in October 2005 when over 1300 people were killed and property worth thousands of crores damaged.
A mild earthquake on Wednesday evening hit the India-Nepal border region and the Kashmir Valley, officials said.
The "slight" quake measured 3.3 on the Richter scale, the India Meteorological Department said.
It also shook the Kashmir Valley, meteorological department chief Sanam Lotus said in Srinagar.
