New Delhi: A young civil services aspirant from Manipur was racially abused and beaten with a wooden stick by three men near his house in north Delhi's Burari area yesterday.
27-year-old victim Brilliant Horam is in hospital with a broken skull and injured limbs.
Police have arrested two local property dealers, identified as Vinod Kumar and Dinesh, in connection with the incident.
"We are trying to nab the remaining accused. A third person, Devender Kumar, has also been arrested on a separate complaint by Manipuri community members for abusing them for lodging a complaint," said additional DCP (north), Brijender Yadav.
Horam, in his complaint, said that he had gone to a stationary shop at the Bengali Colony market in Sant Nagar around 6pm. While he was walking, a youth rinsing his mouth spat on his foot. When Horam protested, instead of apologizing, the youth hurled abuses at him.
Recalling the incident Horam said, "I asked him to apologize, but a tall man came and pushed me to the ground and started calling me names. Soon two others joined him, one of them being my friend's landlord who punched me on the jaw. Before I could react, one of them hit me with a stick on the head."
Horam lost consciousness after the attack and woke up in a hospital.
John Zimik, a representative of Manipuri tribal community Tangkhul Katamnao, said that Horam was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood and was taken to a hospital by his friends. He was found with a deep cut on one side of his head and had to undergo six stitches.
Zimik and his friends informed the cops at Burari police station.
"When we were returning from the police station, a man hurled abuses at us for registering a complaint. We went back and registered another complaint after which he was arrested," said Zimik.
Police have registered an FIR under IPC sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 34 (common intention) and under sections of disrupting communal harmony.
CCTV footages from the area have also been recovered to identify the other accused.
