New Delhi: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced an award of Rs 10 lakh to Sushil Kumar, Assistant Commercial Manager with the Northern Railway, for winning Gold Medal in World Wrestling Championship in Moscow. Sushil defeated Russian Gogaev to win the 66 kg freestyle title yesterday to become the first Indian to win a Gold Medal in World Wrestling Championship.
Congratulating him, Mamata said it is the spirit, drive and dedication of Sushil that has lead to personal achievement and national glory. "His victory is a victory for the 'Rail Parivar' and dedicated to the nation," she said.
Sushil is the third Railwayman to brought laurels in World Wrestling Championship. Railway sportspersons Bishambar Singh and Ramesh Kumar had won a silver and a bronze in the World Wrestling Championships in 1967 and 2009 respectively. PTI
