Mumbai: With the increasing number of swine flu cases in Mumbai, the panic in the city has increased. Data reveals that atleast one person is succumbing to the dreaded H1N1 virus a day.
Five new cases of H1N1 virus were detected in Mumbai on Friday, taking the count of confirmed cases in Mumbai to 29.
Maharashtra which has confirmed 135 cases of swine flu since January this year comes fourth in the rank of heavy-burden states after Rajasthan, Gujarat and Telangana. Highest number of persons (62) has succumbed due to swine flu in Rajasthan, followed by Gujarat (39) and Telangana (36). Maharashtra follows closely on their heels with 34 deaths in rural and urban parts of the state since start of the year. Nagpur has recorded the highest number of deaths (13), followed by Pune (7) and Mumbai (5).
The latest victim of the disease is a 58-year-old man hailing from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, who died late Thursday night of in civic-run Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli.
The BMC said 10 Mumbaikars, including two children, have tested positive for the virus within five days of this month. In Mumbai, all civic hospitals will keep at least two ventilators on standby for H1N1 patients.
Dr. Mangala Gomare said, "Details of positive cases are informed to Ministry of Health for contact tracing. A rapid survey in the community is conducted for finding further symptomatic cases".
