Lucknow building collapse: Samajwadi Party MLA Shahid Manzoor's son detained in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow Building collapse: The police have detained the son of Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Shahid Manzoor in the Lucknow building collapse case. At least three were killed and several people feared trapped after a four-storey residential building collapsed in Lucknow's Hazratganj on Tuesday, January 24.  

The building was bought by Shahid Manzoor's son Nawazish Shahid and nephew Mohammad Tariq. According to reports, the police took Nawazish into custody and interrogated him for an hour and brought him to Lucknow at around 1.30 am on Wednesday. Notably, the building is also named after Nawazish's daughter Alaya. 

Three-member committee formed to probe matter

Meanwhile, on the instruction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter. The committee members include, Lucknow Commissioner Roshan Jacob, Lucknow Joint Commissioner of Police Piyush Mordia and Chief Engineer PWD Lucknow. According to reports, the committee is expected to submit its report within a week. 

Uttar Pradesh DGP DS Chauhan said that the building was constructed "illegally" without taking the required permission. However, it is yet to be ascertained how the building collapsed, he added. 

'Rescue work being carried out in a very scientific way...': UP DGP

"This is the hour of patience, not the time to rush because when you are cutting a building, it should not create any other problem. Rescue work is being carried out in a very scientific way, and I am confident that those who are trapped inside will be saved," DGP Chauhan stated.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate Suryapal Gangwar said NDRF and SDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations. "Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is keeping a watch on the rescue operations. The defence minister has also given instructions. An Army team has arrived here for rescue work," he added.
