Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Odisha CM likely to be chosen in BJP Parliamentary Party meet on June 7

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday took full responsibility for the NCP's poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls and asserted the defeat in Baramati, viewed as a prestige battle, was surprising. Addressing a press conference after the meeting of his party MLAs, Pawar said all legislators were firmly with him and rejected speculation that some were planning to defect to the faction led by Sharad Pawar. "The opposition can say anything. I have always had the support of the people. My MLAs, MLCs have assured me they will always stand by me," he said. Speaking about Baramati, where sitting MP Supriya Sule defeated his wife Sunetra Pawar by a huge margin, the deputy CM said, "The result is surprising since I always had the support of the people there."

"I am surprised by the result of Baramati. Why the people of Baramati did not support me is a matter of concern for me too", said Ajit Pawar. 

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday met his party's three newly elected MPs and said they will strongly raise the state-related issues in the Parliament. The Aam Aadmi Party registered victories in three parliamentary constituencies -- “Hoshiarpur, Anandpur Sahib and Sangrur -- in the Lok Sabha polls. Raj Kumar Chabbewal won from Hoshiarpur, while Malvinder Singh Kang and Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer registered victories from Anandpur Sahib and Sangrur seats respectively. While congratulating the three winners, Mann said now it will be their responsibility to represent Punjab and its people in Parliament and fulfil their responsibilities with utmost honesty and dedication.

Advocate General Ashok Kumar Parija, two advisors to the chief minister and the IT secretary have resigned from their posts after the fall of the BJD government in Odisha. The development came in the wake of BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik's resignation from the post of the chief minister after his party failed to secure a majority in the assembly. Jyoti Prakash Patnaik was appointed as the in-charge AG in place of Parija, according to a notification issued by the law department.

NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Thursday said the INDIA bloc has decided to 'wait and watch' as the BJP is set to form the next government, but there is always hope as the Opposition alliance's tally of seats in the new Lok Sabha is "encouraging". Sule, who defeated her sister-in-law to win the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency for the fourth time, was speaking to reporters here as she visited the city for the first time after the poll victory.

Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday met Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray here. Banerjee's visit came after the INDIA bloc put up impressive performance in the Lok Sabha polls. Both the Sena (UBT) and Trinamool Congress are part of the Opposition alliance.

Newly elected MPs of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance are expected to meet on Friday to elect Narendra Modi as their leader, paving the way for him to take oath as prime minister for a third term. After Modi's election as the leader of NDA MPs, senior members of the alliance like TDP's N Chandrababu Naidu and JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar will join the prime minister for a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to present her the list of parliamentarians supporting him, some alliance members said. He may be sworn in over the weekend, possibly Sunday, they added. The NDA has 293 MPs, comfortably above the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha.

The model code of conduct that came into force on March 16 with the announcement of the Lok Sabha election has been lifted. In a communication to the Union Cabinet Secretary and state chief secretaries, the Election Commission said as results of Lok Sabha elections and assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, along with some assembly bypolls have been declared, "model code of conduct has ceased to be in operation with immediate effect". The model code of conduct is a set of conventions agreed upon by all stakeholders and imposed during elections. Its objective is to keep the campaigning, polling and counting process orderly, clean and peaceful and check any abuse of state machinery and finances by the party in power.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday spoke to TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu over phone and congratulated him over the TDP's resounding victory in Andhra Pradesh Assembly and the Lok Sabha elections.

The JD(U), the support of which along with the TDP is crucial for the new NDA government, will likely make a bid for "up to three" cabinet berths, a senior leader of the Nitish Kumar-led party said on Thursday. With 12 MPs, the JD(U) is the second biggest BJP ally after the Telugu Desam Party's 16, and leaders of the saffron party are in touch with allies over ministerial berths and other issues. “We are now eyeing up to three cabinet berths...,” the JD(U) leader said.

Nearly 90 percent of the candidates vying for the five Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir lost their security deposits, unable to garner one-sixth of the votes polled in their respective constituencies. The voters gave a decisive mandate to the eventual winners on all but one Lok Sabha constituency in the union territory, the Election Commission data revealed.

NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar on Thursday met the newly-elected MPs of his party here and held interactions with them. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) has won eight out of the 10 Lok Sabha seats it contested in Maharashtra in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections. It fought the polls as a constituent of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) along with the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Congress. Of the eight newly-elected parliamentarians, only Supriya Sule (Baramati) and Nilesh Lanke (Ahmednagar) were absent for the meeting at the party office here.

The Congress has convened a meeting of its working committee on June 8 to discuss the Lok Sabha poll result. Votes of the election were counted on June 4. The meeting has been convened by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and he will chair it. Party leaders will discuss the outcome of the Lok Sabha election, sources said. The meeting will be held at 11 am at the Congress headquarters on Saturday. The Congress has emerged as the second largest party in the election and improved its tally to 99, from 52 in 2019 Lok Sabha poll.

PM Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony may take place on June 9 at 6 pm. It was earlier scheduled for June 8, official confirmation on the final date is awaited, sources said.

Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Indian PM Narendra Modi, Sources said.

"Invitation was extended to Nepali PM by Indian PM during Wednesday’s phone conversation," a Nepali official confirmed.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday held a meeting with senior officials of the state, days after election results.

CM Yogi will also visit Delhi today and meet the high command to examine election results in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections 2024.

To start the formation of 18th Lok Sabha, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will meet President Droupadi Murmu today to present the comprehensive list of newly-elected Members of Parliament (MPs). After that President will invite the largest party to form the government.

The date and time of formation of the new government at the Centre has not been finalised yet, said the sources.

TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee reached SP chief Akhilesh Yadav's Delhi residence to meet him. Senior SP leader Professor Ram Gopal Yadav was also present during the meeting. 

BJP's Rae Bareli candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh, who lost to Rahul Gandhi, said that he will be on a partial leave only on Saturdays and Sundays for a year and hoped the Congress leader will solve the problems of the locals.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will visit Delh today to discuss BJP's defeat in Maharashtra in Lok Sabha elections.

Eknath Shinde has called a meeting of Shiv Sena leaders, MPs at 1 pm today to examine the Lok Sabha election results.

The BJD on Wednesday decided to form a committee to examine the cause of its defeat in the elections in Odisha, a party leader said. BJD's Kendrapara MLA Ganeswar Behera said the decision was taken at the meeting chaired by party president Naveen Patnaik with the newly-elected legislators.

"The party has decided to form a committee which will submit its report to the president," he said.

"All have to wait for the report of the committee on the cause of the defeat," he added.

The BJP stormed to power in Odisha on Tuesday by securing 78 of the 147 assembly seats, bringing an end to the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD government that ruled the state for 24 years. The BJD managed to win 51 seats, while the Congress bagged 14 constituencies. The CPI (M) secured one seat, while three Independent candidates also emerged victorious.

India is inviting leaders of a number of its neighbouring countries, including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, to the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the weekend, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

Modi is all set to take charge as the prime minister for a historic third consecutive term with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) winning 293 seats in the Lok Sabha polls.

The people cited above said top leaders of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal and Mauritius are likely to be among the foreign leaders to be invited for Modi's oath-taking ceremony.

The media division of Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe's office said Modi invited him to the swearing-in ceremony. It said Wickremesinghe accepted the invite. It said Wickremesinghe congratulated Modi on the electoral victory in a phone call.

President Joe Biden has congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his electoral victory, with his administration saying that it was looking forward to continuing to further its partnership with India to promote prosperity and innovation, address the climate crisis and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Biden, who is currently travelling to France, personally made a phone call to Modi to congratulate him.

"Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory, and the nearly 650 million voters in this historic election. The friendship between our nations is only growing as we unlock a shared future of unlimited potential," he said in a social media post later.

US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller on election results | "...In terms of the prime minister's-coalition in the different governments, those are all choices for the Indian people to make and we respect the will of the Indian people. I will say that we will look to continue our work with Prime Minister Modi, as you've seen President Joe Biden undertake since he took office. That will continue to be a priority through the issues..."

NDA allies have unanimously approved PM Modi's name as their alliance leader and supported BJP to form the next government at the Centre. The decision was taken during the NDA meeting held at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence on Wednesday.
